Mission British Columbia
Mission is a district municipality in the Lower Mainland of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It was incorporated as a district municipality in 1892, growing to consist of additional towns and backwoods over the years, adding the initial Town of Objective City, long an independent core of the region, in 1969.
It is located on the north bank of the Fraser River, backing onto lakes and mountains overlooking the Central Fraser Valley, 80 km east-southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Historically, hydroelectricity, forestry, and farming were Mission’s chief resource sectors and offered the basis for diverse associated retail and service activities. In recent history, transport enhancements have made it possible for the manufacturing sector to expand beyond sawmilling and food processing.
Forest and wood associated markets control the manufacturing sector, with an emphasis on redcedar shake and shingle mills. The objective likewise holds the only municipal timberland license in British Columbia.
Farming is mostly limited to a narrow belt along the Fraser River, and the unincorporated Dewdney-Deroche district east of Mission consists of the majority of the farms in the area. There are about 96 business and hobby farms in the location. Dairy is the primary farming business; other earnings sources include poultry, hogs, beef, and vegetables.
Mission’s biggest employer is the local school district, School District # 75, and its second-largest employer is the District (i.e. the town) itself.
